The first Abu Dhabi Maritime Heritage Festival kicks off this weekend

The ten-day festival includes live music, workshops, storytelling and food

Looking for something cool and cultural to do in the capital this weekend? The Maritime Heritage Festival is showcasing Abu Dhabi’s history from Friday March 18 to Sunday March 27 at Al Bahar on the Corniche.

The Maritime Heritage Festival is all about celebrating Abu Dhabi’s history with the sea: from fishing to pearl diving. There is a range of activities to choose from on each day of the festival including live music, workshops, food and storytelling.

Visitors to the Maritime Heritage Festival will get to experience a coastal village brought to life with bustling markets, seafaring stories and skills shared by sailors and craftspeople. Tickets are Dhs30 for adults and Dhs15 for kids aged five to 11.

Wondering what else is on the docket?

The fisherman’s market includes a live fish auction, seafood demonstrations on cleaning, salting and spicing fish, and an interactive fishing trail that showcases the skills and traditions of the fishing community. This activity is happening daily from 4pm onwards.

The Emirates Heritage Club at the Maritime Heritage Festival will be holding daily games tournaments with everything from hand-to-hand wrestling and baseball with palm fronds and dates. These activities go from 4pm onwards daily. The Emirates Heritage Club is also hosting the Maritime Heritage Festival Rowing Tournament, where you can watch teams compete for the championship title. The races are on March 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 at 5.30pm.

There are also daily falconry demonstrations, arts workshops, DIY accessories workshops, kayaking, performing arts and shopping from local retailers. Sounds like the ideal way to learn about Abu Dhabi’s history and culture. Are you going to cruise by?
