Spinneys removes single-use plastic bags in Abu Dhabi stores

Abu Dhabi is saying goodbye to single-use plastics. As part of that, Spinneys removes single-use plastic bags in Abu Dhabi stores.

Spinneys has removed single-use plastic bags from Abu Dhabi stores effective Wednesday June 1, which is the same day the Abu Dhabi single-use plastic ban took effect. The plastic bags will be removed from Spinneys Dubai locations from Friday July 1, which is when the emirate will start charging for single-use plastic bags.

To encourage more eco-friendly options, Spinneys will offer a reusable tote bag made from upcycled single-use Spinneys bags and sustainably sourced cork leather.

In partnership with Peahead Eco, a local award-winning sustainable artist, Spinneys has designed a limited-edition shopper, which will be available in select stores across the country starting Wednesday June 1.

In addition, Spinneys will offer a 25 fils discount to any shopper who brings reusable bags to carry groceries, as opposed to charging 25 fils per disposable plastic bag.

Carrefour has also made more sustainable moves in line with Abu Dhabi’s single-use plastic ban. Also from June 1, Carrefour replaced plastic bags with eco-friendly alternatives. The goal is to eliminate plastic from all Carrefour checkout counters.
