If there’s one thing you can say about Back Yard Bistro it’s that it’s chosen a theme, something between a American garage and a petrol station, and stuck with it. To its credit, there is nothing else like it in this city and that’s part of the appeal.
Everything is car-themed and if this was an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Guy Fieri would be foaming at the mouth.
The menu is equally vibrant and eclectic, it’s full of illustrations and is difficult to read.
First to arrive at the table are barbecue chicken wings and rock shrimp. The wings are hot, sticky and perfect and the crisp, battered shrimp with spicy sauce are equally satisfying.
While we appreciate fast and efficient service, our main courses arrive while we’re not even halfway through the starters, that’s a little eager, even for hungry guests like us. Maybe the chef got a sudden burst of energy from the dance music in the room?
The chicken burger is a bit of a puzzle, it’s tasty but there’s a lot going on with cheese, avocado and mango jam, not to mention the fact it’s bright green (it’s a good job we like suprises). The Mexican burger on the other hand is great, with melted cheese and plenty of jalapeños.
Overall, it’s pretty good.
