Bite Rite Resto Café

Quirky breakfast spot on Muroor Road

With its modern, lime-green interiors, Euro-Indian menu and more breakfasts than a weekend at Dr Kellogg’s B&B, Bite Rite is a welcome surprise. Its location is something of an enigma, though. Stranded out on Muroor Road, next to the Red Crescent building, you’re unlikely to simply stumble across it. This presumably explains the sparkling interior and paralysing lack of crowds.

The slick look is a winning one, but Bite Rite has an even more interesting quirk: it doesn’t want you to die of diabetes! This sentiment is a rarity in the city of sugar and snacks, where fat and cholesterol rule the roost. This reveals itself in the shape of a slightly pedantic menu listing a complete nutritional rundown just the right side of guilt-inducing and reading material that suggests we’re all doomed and anyone over 12 stone is on course for a massive coronary. Nevertheless, we like its spunk.

The menu has more than a fair share of surprises – particularly in the breakfast department. Where else on the streets of the capital would you find bread and jam – albeit at the bizarre price of Dhs10? Admittedly, it was the nicest bread and jam we’ve had in some time (the marge was super creamy). Elsewhere, Indian omelettes rub shoulders with bran flakes, French toast and enough peculiar ‘-inos’ and ‘-essos’ to keep coffee lovers buzzing for the rest of the morning. At lunchtime and after dark, it transforms into a decent restaurant, with some fine curries, a smattering of fish dishes and the habitual pizza/pasta fare. There isn’t much about Bite Rite that doesn’t hit the spot. The food is top quality and its makers don’t want you to die. We just can’t argue with that.
