Black Tap

New York craft burger spot has a new beachside home in the capital

Black Tap needs no introduction and neither does Mamsha. So, it makes sense that the viral NY hipster burger and CrazyShakes restaurant found itself in one of Abu Dhabi’s most happening beachside neighbourhoods. And it is the first licensed Black Tap in the capital.

No matter the time of day, it seems you will be greeted by thumping beats and jovial staff who make anyone feel welcome, whether you lean into the hipster vibe of the place, are looking for a family-friendly spot with food to delight little and big kids, have worked up an appetite after a swim at Soul Beach and rock up in your beach gear or you just came over to see what those massive, decked-out shakes are all about.

When we arrive on a fairly busy weekend, the crowd featured all of the above, and then some, with everyone united over the proper burgers, crazy fries and those aforementioned Instagrammable cake shakes – and the beach view.

When you look out onto Soul Beach, it seems wrong to go inside – no matter how funky the interiors are. And you still get the rap, retro classics (Madonna, of course) and beats outside. If you want less sun and sand and more of a zany party vibe, step into the graffitied, black-and-white striped interior to admire the CrazyShake Station (yes, station) and go take the obligatory selfies with your colossal drink.

CrazyShakes may just edge out the burgers and crazy fries for defining Black Tap, so save room – a slab of cake or brownie is perched on the thick milkshake. There’s even a vegan Black N White CakeShake. We dive in expecting a sugarbomb, but the ice-cold shake is surprisingly balanced. Even more impressive, it stays cold to the very end of our leisurely meal. Outside.

Given the OTT motto of the shakes, some of the burgers might feel downright minimalist, like the All-American Burger with lettuce, tomato, pickle and special sauce, but Black Tap knows when things don’t need all the bells and whistles. Of course, if you’re after a tricked-out burger, there are fun ones.

Ever wanted a slice with your burger and fries? Get the hybrid feels with Black Tap’s pizza fries. How about steak? The Philly cheesesteak fries it is.

Black Tap doesn’t take itself too seriously nor does it serve its carb-centric grub with a side of pretention – unlike some trendy places – which is why even with so much to choose from in Mamsha, the crowds are following the booming beats to these burgers.
