Bonna Annee

An authentic Ethopian experience in Abu Dhabi

Bonna Annee
Bonna Annee

We like to be out of our comfort zone and if we’re being honest, African food isn’t something we’re overly familiar with.

So we enjoy the opportunity to venture away from fine dining and into the city to see what else is on offer.

Bonna Annee isn’t glamorous on the outside, but if you judge a book by it’s cover you’ll miss all the good stuff inside.

We take our seats in the cosy venue, full of diners eager to eat the food of their home country and look forward to a feast.

We decide to have the Bonna Annee special, a mix of dishes all served on a giant injera, a type of sour Ethiopian flatbread, and our minds are completely blown from the first bite.

It’s not pretty, you wouldn’t blow up an Instagram feed with your pictures, but forget visuals because every dish we try is superb.
We get stuck in, eating with our hands and using the spongey and sour injera to scoop up all the good stuff.

The wet lamb stew is wonderfully rich, the lentil stew is loaded with garlic and onion, the shiro (a red chickpea paste), is fantastic and like nothing we’ve before. Everything is delicious.

Add to all that a cup of excellent Ethiopian coffee and we’re head over heels in love.

Bonna Annee is special and we can’t wait to return.
