Café Sushi

Review: Relaxed and bright Japanese venue that is a great new option for the city

We’re sitting looking at the plates upon plates of food in front of us and realise that we’ve over-ordered. Especially for a lunch time.

We have one dish that we didn’t really ask for, but gratefully accept (and pay for), but even without those additional dumplings, there’d be a lot of food to get through.

Portions are good here, so don’t think you need too many dishes to fill up (unlike us). The size of the rolls is also unprecedented. In fact, that’s one of just three gripes – the tuna and salmon maki are absolutely huge. So big it’s tough to get them in your mouth in one go, and they start to fall apart due to their size, which makes them a bit messy (which is another niggle).

Finally, staff are lovely, but there’s not a lot of help to navigate the menu, which has some impressive-sounding dishes across its seven pages.

Edamame are quick to the table; they’re freshly steamed with a good chilli sauce slathered over them (but be careful, we both ended up with sauce on our shirts).

Of the two maki we try, the spicy tuna ones are the more simple. We can’t detect much spice to them, but the fish is top quality.

The salmon rolls are rich, thanks in part to creamy avocado and the prawn and black cod dumplings are great when hot, but the cod starts to lose some of its bite the longer they sit. They look great, though, as does everything that turns up. The soused mackerel nigiri is perfectly fine, but we’d try another variant next time we’re here.

And there will be a next time, because despite the prices being a little on the high side and some minor gripes, there is some lovely food here. We also really enjoy the setting and service. So we’ll be back, with a bib and an appetite.

The bill (for two)
1x yellowtail carpaccio Dhs74
1x spicy edamame Dhs28

1x spicy tuna maki Dhs62
1x mackerel nigiri Dhs58
1x large water Dhs30

The bottom line
Lots of choice and top ingredients.
