Game of Toast

Dinner is coming, it’s grilled and oozing with melted cheese

Yes, Game of Toast is a Game of Thrones and toast themed restaurant, because, why not? There is a throne, or a picture of one, it’s made of spoons and forks. There is a banner with the oath of the Night’s Watch and a few other bits of memorabilia. “Dinner is coming” declares the chef’s apron, confidently (and he’ll happily pose for some snaps), but the theme isn’t exactly over-arching throughout.

The place is fun, though. It’s a small hole-in-the-wall, with a simple menu: choose from “House of Toast”, “House of Rolls” or “House of Sides”. The toasts come on white or brown thick-sliced bread and in a variety of meat and veggie options, all smothered in cheese and grilled. There is also the option (which we took) to “make it a meal” by adding a side for Dhs8.

The rolls offer hearty stodge, too, with choices ranging from pulled beef with coleslaw to shrimp with butter sauce and mayo. Sides include incredibly long sweet potato fries and jalapeño poppers – more cheesy goodness. Everything is served on a hipster wooden chopping board (would John Snow eat from a plate?) and comes with sauces such as mustard and spicy mayo.

This is not the place for dieters, but it is the place for those days when you’ve woken up feeling like a White Walker. The concept is perhaps a little strange, but the décor has a slightly New York feel, and meals are cooked to order on an open grill while you perch atop your wooden throne.

Is it a feast fit for a Stark? We enjoyed it, but with only a few seats it’s probably best not to invite the whole of the Seven Kingdoms. The staff are friendly and the service is quick. We’ll raise a (piece of) toast to that.

The Bill (for two)

1x Grilled cheese sandwich meal Dhs26
1x Shrimp roll Dhs30
1x Jalapeño poppers Dhs12
1x Local water Dhs2
Total Dhs70

The bottom line
Toasted sandwiches more fulsome than Robert Baratheon’s beard. Good value for money.
