Kalispera Café

Kalispera, Al Dhafra

From Time Out Abu Dhabi Eating Out 2010

Hidden in a cluster of backstreets off Defense Road, the chances of stumbling across Kalispera are so infinitesimally small that it might as well be invisible – and yet it is always full. Creams and terracotta reds dominate the decor, but it isn’t dark or austere like so many Arabic cafés. It’s has a slightly eccentric charm – with old fixture lists for World and European Cups gone by cluttering the walls around the huge widescreen TV. The menu, like the cosy sofa seating, is comfortable. Kalispera is well known for its pizzas and pastas, while steaks, fish, salads and some of the thickest, tastiest sandwiches in the Emirates are all accompanied by crisp fries and a dose of satisfaction. The only negative aspect is that it can be expensive and a 15 per cent service charge means that a simple sandwich and a drink can cost close to Dhs100. It’s good, but at these prices you’d struggle to make it your lunchtime regular.
