Moti Mahal

This is capable Indian food, served in pleasant surroundings of dark woods and traditional Indian art

From Time Out Abu Dhabi Eating Out 2010

This chain restaurant has branches as far apart as London and Calgary and Abu Dhabi’s edition is a popular choice with an expat community pleased with a name they recognise. It’s an attractive, unimposing restaurant with very friendly and attentive staff, and it has made a name for itself with families looking for somewhere they can take their toddlers without fear of aggravating other diners. The wooden interior exudes a sense of cool, even in the summer heat, and the décor is understated, if not occasionally eccentric (who chose the bargain basement water feature on the shelf?).

The food is pleasant enough, if not out of this world. Special mention goes to the fish – what these men can do with a spicy piece of hammour should be noted down and preserved for future generations – and the house speciality, dhal makahni, is equally as exquisite. But the tricks seem to stop there. It’s inexpensive, however, and a family of four can eat to bursting without worrying about where the next meal is coming from, and in this city, that makes Moti Mahal well worth considering.
