There are surely few better lunch spots in the capital than the terrace at Ornina.
Even if the food were a disappointment, you’d still have a pleasant time gazing out over the bright blue waters at Al Bandar Marina. But luckily our latest experience at the Middle Eastern restaurant wasn’t just brilliant because of the views.
Hosting regular belly dance shows and a ‘mysterious’ ladies’ night, many of you might be under the impression that this spot above Pacifico Tiki is purely a late-night type of place. However, the menu of hot and cold mezze, grills and main courses is served throughout the day.
We’re greeted by a smiling and friendly server, and eased in with a plate of olives and nibbles.
It isn’t long before our pleasingly smooth bowl of hummus arrives (you can’t go wrong with the classics, what can we say?) and our first (of many) helpings of Arabic bread.
We also go for a zesty fattoush salad packed with crunchy vegetables, and some wonderfully spicy batata harra.
Oh her recommendation we also try the zaalouk, and the combination of the colourful ingredients (grilled aubergines, tomatoes, garlic and cumin) with the chunky slices of bread is wondrous.
There’s a chilled-out, holiday vibe to the place, and all the mezzes are expertly made and bursting with spices and flavours.
The portions are even too big for us. So we take the leftovers home; it’s far too good to waste.
