Shay Madhboot

A cosy café specialising in local flavours

Tucked away in a residential area, Shay Madhboot is a prime example of why we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. In fact, as soon as we step inside we see that its basic exterior is part of its local charm.

A family run business, the casual café serves authentic Middle Eastern breakfast dishes for purse-friendly prices. Upon arrival, we’re greeted with a wide smile and a warm welcome by the server, which immediately creates a homely atmosphere.

First up, we order Shay Madhboot’s signature karak – the place is famed for the traditional tea and it’s a real treat for those with a sweet tooth.

The menu includes everything from Turkish eggs and chicken livers to breakfast burgers and shakshuka. We go for the porotta with egg and cheese before sampling the chili cheese toast. Both freshly prepared, they’re served hot and deliciously cheesy, though the chili cheese toast instantly becomes a favourite – it has the perfect level of spice and is springy enough to make the perfect Instagram shot.

The café itself is pretty intimate, with limited seating (there are only about four tables) and the interior is fairly basic (but comfortable). However, it’s worth a visit for the food alone.

This place offers a fantastic reason to go off the beaten track.
