Tucked away upstairs in the clubhouse at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, it’s fair to say that Sushi Maru has quite an unusual location.
The extensive menu also has some less-than-ordinary plates, with the spicy Korean-style sea snail standing out as the most notable. The decor is certainly a little dated, but with an open sushi bar, we’re confident we’re in for some truly authentic delights.
We stave off our hunger with some of the salty snacks on our table, but the side of cold egg in a pot doesn’t really do it for us.
But we have more than enough food to go around. The rainbow maki roll is huge, with each piece almost too big to go in in one go. It’s packed full of meaty shrimp tempura and carefully diced cucumber, with a colourful pattern of salmon, tuna and avocado layered on top.
Meanwhile, the chicken teriyaki bento box is also a mighty spread. As well as a portion of chicken and vegetables in a pleasantly sticky teriyaki sauce, there’s fresh tuna sashimi, vegetable tempura, fish balls, sticky rice, seaweed and calamari rings. The battered items are a bit greasy and stodgy for our liking, but getting so much for Dhs84 is a totally super deal.
For a change of scene and good-value, authentic Japanese, Sushi Maru is a real winner.
