The Retreat

A lounge bar overlooking the driving range at Abu Dhabi Golf Club

The Retreat
The Retreat

After a round on the golf course there’s nothing better than a pint and a bite to eat on a charming al fresco terrace.

But The Retreat isn’t solely for those sporting plus fours and a driver – the outside area is equally appealing for hotel guests and visitors without a golfing handicap too. The large outdoor area is the best place to pull up a chair and enjoy the views of the course. Inside there’s a typical sports bar vibe, with big screens and range of high and low seating.

Food-wise there’s a petite menu but everything you’d expect to see on there is present and correct – from burgers to nachos, fish and chips and more.

It’s all fine – if nothing special. The boneless wings come with a choice of rubs, from barbecue to Samurai or fire cracker. If you like your wings spicy then opt for the latter, which are tasty and warming rather than burn-your-tongue fiery.

The Aged Mac is disappointing though, being overly rich, creamy and lacking any kind of bite in the pasta or tang from any cheese – even though we’re told it has gruyère, cheddar and Parmesan in. It’s a bit bland, though the panko crust gives it a nice crunch.

The setting is charming and the menu has potential, but dishes just lack a bit of oomph that would see us hurrying back.
