We love shopping in Abu Dhabi, and soon there’ll be a brand new mall for us to get lost and spend all of our money in.
My City Centre Masdar is set to open in the next few months with more than 70 stores sprawling across 18,500 sq m of retail space (it sounds big to us) – including a massive Carrefour.
We first told you about the opening back in 2017, and the Dhs300 million development will be one of the UAE’s most eco-friendly malls – so you can feel less guilty about your carbon footprint (and save your concern for those expensive shoes that you really didn’t need).
Like any decent mall, there’ll be a tonne of leisure facilities and plenty of places to refuel with some good grub once you can take no more traipsing around the shops.
The mall is being built by Majid Al Futtaim (their first in the capital) and is set to open in the second quarter of 2019 (so hopefully by the end of June) – although exact dates are yet to be announced.
The mall’s construction has created 1,500 jobs already in its building phase and another 2,000 jobs will open up once it’s in full swing.
The new mall is centrally placed within the planned Masdar City transit network, next to the proposed Masdar City Metro Station and within 300 metres of the nearest proposed Light Rail Transit and Bus Rapid Transit stops.
The mall will also be connected by public buses, with plans for an autonomous electric vehicle to connect it with other locations within Masdar City. Electrical car owners will have access to 18 charging points, and a number of priority parking spaces for vehicle-sharing services.
“As we progress on developing our first mall in Abu Dhabi, My City Centre Masdar underscores Majid Al Futtaim’s commitment to the capital’s retail sector in line with Masdar City and the UAE’s long-term sustainability goals,” says Ghaith Shocair, chief executive officer of Shopping Malls at Majid Al Futtaim – Properties.
“My City Centre Masdar demonstrates the delivery of our strategy to create retail destinations that address the specific needs of the communities we serve, while underscoring Majid Al Futtaim’s sustainability focus by engaging with them to promote an eco-friendlier lifestyle,” he adds.
We can’t wait to hit the shops.
