Get into gear for the Special Olympics with these cycling sessions

Preparations for the sporting spectacle are starting to ramp up

The Special Olympics arrives in Abu Dhabi next year for what promises to be one of the biggest sporting spectacles the UAE has ever seen.

And officials are busy working behind the scenes to make sure it’s bigger and better than ever before.

A host of events have been staged over the past year or so to build excitement in the UAE capital ahead of the Games, which take place from March 14-21 2019.

And the latest initiative is guaranteed to get supporters in gear for the sporting action.

Cyclists of all ages, abilities, fitness levels and speeds are being invited to take part in a special Cycle Unified ride around Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit.

The sessions will be held on the last Sunday of every month from 6pm to 10pm for the rest of the year, with the 2019 schedule to be announced at a later date.

The first one is this Sunday, October 28, with the sessions also taking place on November 25 and December 30.

Cycle Unified is open to the general public and all people of determination – with people with and without intellectual disabilities being encouraged to ride, side-by-side.

The aim is to break down stereotypes and promote social inclusion.

The event is part of the regular StartYAS™ initiative by Daman’s ActiveLife Health Authority Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Sports Council.

Each week, thousands of Abu Dhabi residents gather at the world-famous circuit to walk, run and cycle around the actual Formula One track.
