Afya Restaurant
This casual spot at the cool Traders Hotel has come up with a burger to match its setting: quirky. The bun is made from pepperoni pizza for a start, then between it is a burger, beef short rib, beef bacon, onion rings, salad, lettuce, tomato and cheese. Sounds like a belly-buster, right? Well, it also comes with nachos, parmesan fries and barbecue sauce. You’ll struggle to get a belt on after all that, championship or otherwise.
Dhs79. Traders Hotel Abu Dhabi, Khor Al Maqta (02 510 8888).

Amerigos Mexican Bar & Restaurant
The Torta de Milanesa is a genius invention that combines the best bits of a burger and a fajita. A breaded chicken breast is loaded with refried beans, cheese, guacamole and chipotle mayo and served with a mountain of fries and a glass of hops.
Dhs90. Radisson Blu Abu Dhabi, Yas Island (02 656 2412).

Angar
If Indian food is your favourite, then you need to try one of these awesome spicy burgers. The Punjabi Burger includes chunks of chicken tikka, house-pickled carrots and cucumber and cumin raita on a saffron bun. Or, if you want a vegetarian option, the Mumbai Pao features beetroot, chickpeas, red beans, quinoa and grilled paneer, all served on a spinach pao. Both come with a side of vegetable pakora or poppadums and Indian hops to wash it down with. This is the kind of fusion food we like.
Dhs60. Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi, Yas Island (02 656 0600).

Appaloosa
The Burj Khalifa burger is possibly one of the most outrageous things we’ve ever seen. Standing at 30cm high it consists of a tower of wagyu beef burgers, melted cheese, bacon, lettuce and mayonnaise. Or, if you want something with a little more kick and less height, then you can always go for the Explosive RDX burger with pepper spread, lemon aioli, a paprika bun and lettuce.
Dhs60 (Explosive RDX), Dhs129 (Burj Khalifa). Marriott Hotel Al Forsan, Khalifa City A (02 201 4131).

Bareburger
The Mighty Quaker has been created just for Knockout Burgers. It has a double venison patty, cheddar cheese, beef bacon, caramelised onion, portobello mushrooms and smoky barbecue sauce. This delightful combination is all sandwiched in a brioche bun and served with a choice of fries or salad (if you think that’ll make it all healthy).
Dhs65. Marina Village, Marina Mall (02 441 1723).

Belgian Café
The Big Boys Burger isn’t just for big boys, we’ve been assured ladies and smaller gents can order it, too. But whatever your size when you start, we guarantee you’ll be a little bit bigger when you’ve finished it. Dhs149. InterContinental Hotel Abu Dhabi, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street (02 304 8304).

Belgian Café Yas Island
The Triple Punch mini burgers might be small in size, but you’ll be telling all your mates how great this platter is for weeks to come. The habanero pulled lamb with grilled chorizo, guacamole, pickled red onion and cheese sauce is a real treat, but so is the wagyu beef schnitzel with crispy veal bacon and caramelised onion, and the duck confit burger with braised sauerkraut, fried onion rings and pear and fig relish. The tasty trio also comes with chipotle sweet potato fries and one pint of hops.
Dhs90. Radisson Blu Hotel Abu Dhabi, Yas Island (02 656 2406).

BOA Steakhouse

For less than Dhs200 you can get two signature BOA wagyu burgers (that’s it on our front cover this week) and two house beverages or soft drinks, all served with views of the Eastern Mangroves. The burger has a wagyu patty topped with pulled short rib, bacon, smoked cheddar, fried pickles and a fried egg between the brioche bun. Now that’s a heavyweight meal.
Dhs199. Eastern Mangroves Promenade, Salam Street (02 641 1500).

Café 302
This hipster and wholesome café is offering brilliant deals on burgers for vegetarians, vegans and, of course, meat lovers. The friendly pub has created a monstrous burger in honour of Showdown Week. The giant 1.5kg burger consists of two huge patties of premium beef, cheddar cheese, gherkins, onion, tomatoes and lettuce in a freshly-baked roll. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a hearty serving of fries and a bottle of selected hops with it too. Make sure you arrive hungry.

For Knockout Burgers, the venue has put a great deal together on the best-selling Courtyard Burger. It comes with an Angus beef patty, crispy turkey bacon, cheddar cheese, a freshly baked bun and a free bottle of hops to go with it.
Dhs60. Courtyard by Marriott World Trade Center Abu Dhabi, Al Markaziyah (02 698 2255).

Hamilton’s Gastropub
This smart venue on Saadiyat Island is serving up a hearty burger with a fancy twist. The Hamilton’s Flaming Burger features a beef patty topped with lettuce, onions, veal bacon, melted cheese, foie gras and spiced mayonnaise. There’s a premium-beverage based sauce poured on top and set ablaze, as well. Now that’s what we call making a dramatic entrance.
Dh75. Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas, Saadiyat Island (02 697 0000).

Hemingway’s
The Mega UFC burger, which has been created especially for the event, requires a healthy appetite. The beef patty is topped with cheddar cheese, fried egg, turkey bacon, fried onion, tomato, lettuce, Sriracha mayo and served with an enormous mound of ‘cheesy madness’ hand-cut potato fries. It’s pretty epic as far as burgers go. You can choose to add a pint of hops, too.

You can also add on crispy-coated brie, truffle brie or foie gras if you’re feeling particularly extra. There’s also a platter of mini wagyu sliders with brie, beef bacon, cheddar and caramelised onions available. See if you can stand to share them.

Mai Café
Are there any New Zealanders on the UFC card? We’re not sure, but that hasn’t stopped  this poolside bar at Aloft Abu Dhabi offering up its Maori burger for Showdown Week. Between the brioche bun you’ll find an 225g New Zealand striploin topped with cheese, the kitchen’s secret sauce, veal bacon, lettuce, tomato, and caramelised onion. Oléa
This upmarket restaurant has a perfect spot on Saadiyat Island. During Showdown Week you can get a grilled beef burger with turkey bacon, cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise and sliced pickled beetroot plus a pint of hops for Dhs110. We reckon that’s worth heading out to the island for.

PJ O’Reilly’s
The current Time Out Abu Dhabi Pub of the Year is offering a choice of two burgers, neither of which are for the faint-hearted. The TNT burger packs an explosive punch, as you might imagine, with hot sauce drizzled over a spicy buffalo chicken burger. If that’s too tame for you, try tackling the JawBreaker, which has a stack of three patties alongside the usual salad, onions, cheese and other accompaniments. Time to open wide.

Stills Restaurant & Bar
Head to Stills on Yas Island to get your hands on its Signature Wagyu Burger for Dhs99, instead of the usual Dhs135. This hearty handful features a 100 percent wagyu patty, grilled onions, mushrooms, country-aged cheddar, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo and ketchup, all wedged within a soft, sesame bun. Bosh.
Dhs99. Crowne Plaza Yas Island (02 656 3066).

Stock Burger Co.
These out-there creations are the total opposite of a bog-standard cheese burger. Choose from a satay burger topped with pickled cabbage and satay sauce, all-day breakfast burger with bacon, eggs, tomato and hash browns, or, if you like bit of a spice, there’s always the nacho burger, served with guacamole, spicy tomato salsa, sour cream, pickled jalapeño and crispy nachos. The Retreat
The Nasty Burger Round 11 has taken The Retreat’s original Nasty Burger and made it that bit more formidable (or beautiful, depending how you look at it). It comes with breaded chicken, smoked-pepper mayonnaise, jalapeños, creamy buffalo mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, tangy tomato salsa and homemade guacamole, all sandwiched in a brioche bun. Meanwhile the Heavyweight burger is only for those who really mean business, with a grilled US Angus beef patty topped with seared foie gras, mustard mayonnaise and homemade onion jam. It all sounds anything but nasty.
Dhs75 (burger only), Dhs85 (with a bottle of hops). The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa, Khalifa City A (02 616 9999).

The Tavern
The friendly British-style pub has created a super burger called The Thrill Grill. It includes your choice of either Angus beef or breaded chicken, topped with melted cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, cucumber pickles and beef bacon. You can get all this plus a pint of hops for a special price during Showdown Week.
Dhs60. Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort, Corniche Road East (02 677 3333).

The Warehouse

Choose from The Mexicano, with chicken, guacamole, cheddar cheese, jalapeños and tortilla chips, The Philly, with a beef patty, coleslaw, mushrooms and cream cheese, or the Cheeselicious, with a beef burger, bacon and lashings of cheddar cheese sauce.
Dhs79. Hilton Capital Grand Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street (02 666 5508).

Dhs99. Yas Island Rotana, Yas Island (02 656 4155).

ZEROFAT Abu Dhabi
The good news is that not all these burgers will leave you fearing that your jeans won’t fit afterwards. The burgers from ZEROFAT are good for you and totally delicious, and the Showdown Week Detox Combo even comes with an antioxidant-packed healthy mocktail. The shroom beef burger is one of the healthy homegrown restaurant’s best-selling dishes, and it features a tender beef patty, ranch sauce, crispy onions, caramelised bacon jam and low-fat Swiss cheese. The burger is normally Dhs80 by itself and here it’s
Dhs70 with a drink, so you’d be foolish not to try it.
