10
Pumpkin

Sweet or savoury? We reckon the former, but clearly the humble pumpkin pie suffers because of its ambiguity. It squeezes onto the list, but isn’t a favourite at Time Out HQ.

Where to get one: First crust plates up a seriously smooth pumpkin pie that’s a hit whatever the season.

9
Cherry

Super sweet but packed with fruit, cherry pie is a dynamite choice, for those trying to trick themselves into thinking their pick for pud isn’t all that calorific. We appreciate the effort, guys.

Where to get one: If cherry is your choice check out Clinton St. Baking Co’s maple-enhanced version.

8
Mississippi Mud

An American fave and one that is sure to induce hostile levels of blood sugar. The Mississippi mud pie is as fun to order as it is to eat. Expect a messy outcome but stomach full to the corners.

Where to get one: Mississippi mud pies are hard to come by this side of the US state’s famous river, but First Crust can always be trusted to serve up a killer slice.

7
Banana Cream

We’re getting into the big leagues now and a real hitter in the shape of the banana cream pie. The fruity-creamy concoction is light enough to feel you haven’t over indulged, and is no doubt a top ‘alternative’ pick to the conventional podium-takers.

Where to get one: Magnolia Bakery. Not only does this world-famous bakery whip up a cracking banana pudding, it’s banana cream pies are a work of art, too.

6
Lemon Meringue

Another light way to end a meal – or gorge on at snack-time – but this pie comes with a tarty tang that elevates it to new heights. Definite palate cleanser before making moves for drinks.

Where to get one: Hungry? Jones the Grocer offers up a whopping 1.8kg mammoth lemon meringue tart that can feed a dozen mouths.

5
Blueberry

Another fruity number, the blueberry pie paves the way for decadent desserting without the guilt (or so we keep telling ourselves). Wonderfully satisfying, it even comes with free deep purple lipstick. Mwah.

Where to get one: Check out beverlycakes.com for next day delivery on party-sized pies.

4
Pecan

Nuts for a cobbler? Pecan pie boasts a robust constitution that ensures a filling bite on every fork (or whatever the utensil of choice). Just the right amount of crumbly, it’s a smash hit in our eyes.

Where to get one: Picking pecan? Look no further than Looshi’s, where your next perfect slice is waiting.

3
Key Lime

Creeping into the top three, this treasured pie dazzles with its limey-zest and fruity flair. The more liberal the use of lime juice by chef, the better.

Where to get one: The MAINE Oyster Bar & Grill is no stranger to the art of the key lime pie – a smooth way to end a meal at this Time Out fave.

2
Custard

Did it rank highly because we all dream of propelling one into the face of our boss? Maybe. But custard pie is also a supreme slice to be reckoned with when dessert time rolls around.

Where to get one: Nightjar may be famed for its java, but its bites are now mean feat either. Take a bite out of its custard pie for instant gratification.

1
Apple

The undisputed powerhouse of the pie game, the apple pie takes no prisoners and gives no quarter. It’s held top spot in our hearts (and stomachs) for years, and its reign shows no sign of ending.

Where to get one: Sarabeth’s. This New York favourite is a top pick to get the classic all-American dessert, served à la mode (with a dollop of vanilla ice cream).
