Abu Dhabi’s first dine in the dark experience is opening soon

Head to Bab al Qasr on the Abu Dhabi Corniche in September

Abu Dhabi’s foodies love a new dining experience. From our early-morning eggs benny to late night cheese and grape (plus brunches and business lunches in between) residents of the capital know how to eat in style.

But have you ever eaten in pitch darkness? We’re talking feel your way around the table and don an apron so you don’t ruin your clothes kind of darkness.

This food trend comes around every few years, and is already a staple for adventurous eaters in Dubai. Now, dining in the dark is coming to Abu Dhabi too.

Bab Al Qasr Hotel in Al Bateen is launching a dark dining experience on Wednesday September 15 at its restaurant Fresh Basil. The experience will go from 8pm to 10pm from Mondays to Fridays. It will set you back Dhs249 per person for a three-course set menu that can be customised to any diet.

The experience will be open to diners 12 years and older, and requires a reservation in advance. It could be the perfect date night activity, and if you’re receiving this article from your spouse, consider it hinted.

Servers will don night-vision goggles to help guests navigate in the dark, and you won’t be able to eat with a knife (understandably) or see what you’re eating. The idea behind the concept, which first gained popularity in Paris in the 90s, is that when you take away one sense, the others are enhanced.

In theory, you’ll be able to taste and smell your food more strongly than if you ate it after giving it a good stare-down.

Anyone who has spent hours scrolling through tasty plates on the ‘gram, or procrastinated for hours by watching strangers cook on TikTok, can tell you that we all eat with our eyes. Maybe it’s time to taste our food differently.

Dhs249. Mon-Fri, 8pm-10pm. Starting Sep 15. Bab Al Qasr, Corniche Road, Abu Dhabi (056 992 2078).
