COVID-19 update: UAE schools extend remote learning

NCEMA shared the update on Wednesday January 12

UAE students will continue remote learning by another week. The distance education extension is being implemented to keep students and staff safe in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and recent increase in cases around the world from the Omicron variant.

Many pupils began the new school term with two weeks of distance learning as a precautionary measure, and it is being extended by another week. The latest update shared by the National Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA) states that United Arab Emirates students will learn virtually from Monday January 17 to Friday January 21.

Additionally, all tests and exams that require in-person attendance are postponed until after Friday January 28, and will be “based on the pandemic situation of the country.” The protocol is for schools and universities.

The mandate applies on a national level, and says “local authorities and teams in each emirate have the flexibility of implementation”.

NCEMA UAE announced the schooling update on Wednesday January 12 and stated: “The pandemic is being closely monitored, to facilitate the safe return of students, teachers and administrative staff at educational facilities and protect their health and safety.”

Wondering whether students will continue with remote learning in Abu Dhabi? Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee approved the extension of remote learning for one week from Monday 17 January, 2022 to “enable all education facilities to be fully prepared for a safe return for students”.

The mandate applies to all public and private schools in Abu Dhabi, including colleges, universities and training institutes in the capital.

UAE pupils started the January 2022 term with a new timetable because schools shifted for the new United Arab Emirates working week. In 2022, students from public and private UAE schools are now attending lessons from Monday to Thursday, with a half day on Friday. They now have Saturday and Sunday fully off.

From Mon Jan 17 to Fri Jan 21.
