Expo City: 4 things you need to know

We’re already looking forward to the opening in October 2022

We were all sad to see Expo 2020 come to an end earlier this year in March.

However, we are very excited to see Expo City open in October of this year. Originally named District 2020, it was announced in June that the city would actually be known as Expo City.

As we wait for the official opening, here are three big things you need to know about the brand new Expo City.

1. Green Zone

Expo City will be car-free. Furthering Dubai’s focus on becoming a more economical and sustainable city, Expo City will aim to provide various forms of ‘clean’ transportation. From e-scooters, e-bikes, buggies and pedestrianized areas, there will be plenty of options for those living and working in the new city.

As Dubai moves to being more eco-friendly and charges for plastic bags have been introduced, Expo City will also be free from single-use plastics.

Siemans will support cloud technology in Expo City via Mindsphere. This technology will allow for smart metering of energy consumption, in order to increase the efficiency of power, light, water and climate control systems on site.

2. Free Zone

Similar to the structure found in DIFC, Expo City will be marked as a free-zone area in Dubai. This means that the new city will enable foreign investors and expats to have full ownership over businesses. Currently there are over forty free-zones in the UAE.

3. Some Expo 2020 attractions will remain

Some attractions that we all know and love from Expo 2020 will remain as the area transitions to become Expo City. Over 80% of the original Expo 2020 structures will remain in place.

A number of country and Expo 2020 pavilions will remain. For example, the UAE Pavilion, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion, the Woman’s Pavilion, the Vision Pavilion, Alif – the Mobility Pavilion and Terra, the Sustainability Pavilion will remain at Expo City Dubai. Other pavilions that will still be able to be visited will be reworked versions of the Luxembourg, Australia, Pakistan, India, Morocco and Egypt pavilions. And The Opportunity Pavilion will become the Expo 2020 Dubai Museum.

The iconic Al Wasl Plaza, the Garden in the Sky observation tower and the Surreal Water Feature will continue to be accessible in the new city.

Alongside other new features, a new exhibition called Stories of Nations will be built.

4. Accessibility

Expo City will continue to be accessible via Dubai Metro. The Expo 2020 station will remain in operation, and will continue to serve those who will be living and working in the new city. Of course, the site will also be accessible by car, even though inside the site will be car-free.

As Expo City will be a hub for business, entrepreneurship and a residential area, digital accessibility will be key. Expo City will be the largest space in the world to be fully covered by a 5G-enabled network.
