But they split opinion, with many preferring their toadstools to stay within the confines of Mario Kart. It’s a pie with potential, but it flatters to deceive when the big hitters come into the equation.

Where to try one: Pizza Pazza may not be authentic Italian, but it has mastered this simple classic.

A pie that excels in its simplicity, and a popular choice because of its distinctive style of crust, the Napoli was unfortunate not to break into Time Out’s top three varieties of pizza. Effortlessly delicious, chefs can do a lot worse than putting the Napoli front and centre on their menu.

Where to try one: 800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria. The clue is in the name.

Four-cheese
Gooey, stringy cheese is wholesome goodness we can’t get enough of. So you can only imagine the reaction of Time Out’s ancestors when some genius decided to pile mounds upon mounds of the stuff on a pizza. It’s a simple formula: give the people what they want, and then some.

Where to try one: Mambo Gourmet Pizza is more than generous with the mountain of cheese atop its Quattro Fromaggi.

Margherita
It’s easy to over-complicate food. The pursuit of taste sensation can often lead to a dead end with too many flavours trying to get in the driving seat. Basil, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes: easy as 1, 2, 3. Pass us a slice, would ya? Boring, it’s not.

Where to try one: The Regina Margherita at Torno Subito is effortlessly elegant.

We won’t hear a bad word said against this elite-tier topping. Are its glory days behind it? We think not. There is a reason it is always top of the menu in restaurants and delivery services alike. Pepperoni can pack a punch too, so underestimate it at your peril.

Where to try one: A proper New York pizza, the Pepperoni Primo from Pitfire should top your list.
