First look: Silk & Spice reopens in Abu Dhabi

The award-winning Thai restaurant closed in 2016 and fans are eager to return

For fans of Silk & Spice, it has been a long five years. The popular Thai restaurant in the Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche first opened in 2012 before it closed in 2016. And it is reopening after nearly five years on Tuesday (October 19), to the excitement of fans eager to munch its green papaya salad and Thai green curry.

Step into the new Silk & Spice in Corniche, and be greeted with luxurious and modern interiors featuring sharp angles and dark ceilings. The initial impression could be minimalist, but take a closer look because there are beautiful details everywhere you look, from the wooden panels to the striking wall fixtures.

There are nooks and crannies that will make you and your guests feel you’re in a private space as opposed to a room with other people, making it good for business lunches as much as dates.

If you’re after a seat with a view, there are airy booths with plush sofas featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto the water.

Dining with a group? There is a rich low table guests can pull up to with seats (complete with backrests) on the ground.

The menu showcases the mouth-tingling flavours, and, yes, heat that Thai cuisine is traditionally known for with its bold dishes, including yum talay, a signature Thai spicy seafood salad, and som tum goong, a zingy green papaya salad with grilled prawns to start.
For mains, do not miss goong phad nam makham, stir-fried prawns with tamarind sauce, and nua yang rad gaeng kiew warn, grilled beef in green curry sauce. Speaking of curries, fans will want to order the gaeng lueng goong, which boasts prawns in a rich yellow Thai curry.

Make sure you save room for dessert because Silk & Spice has some tasty finishes to their meals, including khao niew ma muang, mango sticky rice with ice cream.

Silk & Spice has the Siam Bar featuring signature mixed drinks to complement a meal.
For a trip to luxe Thailand without the airfare, this could well be your place.

Opens Oct 19, Mon-Sat noon-3.30pm, 7pm-11pm. Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, Corniche Road, sofitelabudhabicorniche.com/restaurant-bar/silkandspice (02 813 7777).
