Hungry for a slice of Detroit-style pizza in the capital? Emmy Squared is opening in Abu Dhabi in Yas Bay Waterfront. Time Out got an exclusive first look at Emmy Squared’s first international location.
Emmy Squared gets its name from co-founder Emily Hyland as well as the square pizzas Detroit is known for. Emmy Squared opened its first location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 2016. Since then, the Detroit-style pizza joint has expanded across New York City and into further states in the USA. Now, Emmy Squared has chosen Abu Dhabi for its very first international location. (Aren’t we lucky?)
Wondering about those Detroit pizza pies Emmy Squared is known for? Emmy Squared does wood-fired, Detroit-inspired pizzas that have fluffy dough but with a crispy bottom and a cheese frico crust. Additionally, the pizza restaurant is recognised for its signature sauce stripes. (Expect to see them filling your Insta feed soon.) Emmy Squared promises to deliver quality ingredients as well as unique pizza toppings such as hollandaise and smoked gouda. More of a pizza purist? The brand also has more traditional pizza toppings like mozzarella, kale and caramelised onions.
Emmy Squared is named for its popular pizzas, but the casual restaurant also serves up comforting American dishes. Its burgers have also become a menu staple along with its supersized sandwiches. For instance, the award-winning Le Big Matt Burger is a filling burger made with a double stack of grass-fed beef patties, pickles, “Sammy sauce” and American cheese sandwiched between a pretzel bun. (It’s named after co-founder Matt Hyland.) For starters, you could go with the Zia Fries: waffle fries topped with scallions, hatch chili pimento cheese and ranch for a fun twist on the pizza theme.

This pizza spot is all about square pans, and you’ll notice the theme cleverly continuing with Emmy Squared’s bold interiors. Black-and-white square tiles accent the wooden floors. Neon art and playful minimalist portraits deck the wall in pleasing square styles. The sunny spot has tables by the windows, cozy booths tucked around all of the wall art and a patio for when the weather is nice.
Emmy Squared is near Café Del Mar and the Hilton, and is located just further back from water.

Emmy Squared is from the same team behind funky Japanese fusion spot Akiba Dori. The latter also opened in trendy Yas Bay Waterfront in 2021 and is dishing out its Tokyo-style Neapolitan pizzas to hungry people in the capital at its first Abu Dhabi location.
Yas Bay Waterfront is constantly bringing fresh restaurant openings and new places to explore since it officially opened in December 2021.
