COVID-19 update: Abu Dhabi schools to switch to remote learning for start of new term

The guideline is a precautionary measure to ensure safe learning

Abu Dhabi has announced that students will start their new school term with remote learning as a precautionary measure to keep pupils in the capital safe.

The schooling update was approved by the Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee and states that pupils will be on remote learning for the first two weeks of the new school term in January 2022 to “ensure a safe return to schooling” as part of the coronavirus safety protocols in effect in the capital.

The mandate applies to all public and private schools in Abu Dhabi, including colleges, universities and training institutes in the capital.

To ensure safe learning when Abu Dhabi students return to class, there will be increased, ongoing COVID-19 campaigns for the education sector personnel during these two weeks.

Additionally, the COVID-19 situation will continue to be monitored for a safe transition from distance learning to a return to in-school learning.

The latest coronavirus update in Abu Dhabi had the Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee encouraging academic and administrative staff, as well as parents and guardians, to receive a booster shot and to continue observing all precautionary COVID-19 safety measures, such as maintaining social distancing, wearing a face mask, and regularly washing and sanitising hands.

Furthermore, UAE schools will also switch to remote learning when the semester begins on Monday January 3, 2022. The United Arab Emirates school distance learning switch was announced the same day Abu Dhabi shared its update to move to distance learning.

The wide-reaching COVID-19 school mandate applies to all UAE schools, training centres and universities.

Those attending specialist vocational training centres, clinical research centres in universities and laboratories must adopt a hybrid learning system.

The Ministry of Education announced the distance learning and revealed that when students return to class pupils will be required to provide a negative PCR test result taken within 96 hours.

Additionally, parents and guardians will need to present a green pass on the Al Hosn app upon entry to educational facilities.

The school change was announced the same day Abu Dhabi shared updated entry requirements for those travelling to the capital from within the UAE. From Thursday December 30, vaccinated individuals entering Abu Dhabi must present green status on the Al Hosn app to enter Abu Dhabi.

Those who are unvaccinated and wish to enter the emirate from within the UAE, must have a negative PCR test result received within 96 hours. The COVID-19 safety measures were shared by the Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee (NCEMA) on Tuesday December 28.

In addition to the green pass and PCR tests, EDE scanners will continue to be used at Abu Dhabi’s borders to detect potential COVID-19 cases.

Abu Dhabi pupils will also have a new school timetable in 2022 because schools in the UAE are changing their schedules to correspond to the new UAE working week.

In the new year, students from public and private schools in the United Arab Emirates will attend lessons from Monday to Thursday, with a half day on Friday. UAE pupils will have Saturday and Sunday fully off as their new weekend.

From Jan 2022.
