Check out this free Rooftop Rhythms throwback edition this week

It’s the longest running open mic night in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi’s longest-running poetry open mic night, Rooftop Rhythms, is back with an in-person event at Manarat Al Saadiyat that you don’t want to miss.

Rooftop Rhythms and The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi are hosting a special “throwback edition” of the open mic night on Friday February 25 at 8pm. Tickets are free, but you’ll need to book your spot on the The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi website because it’s filling up fast. Attendees will also enjoy a live music feature set by The Once: a Canadian folk-pop trio, built around their performance at Expo 2020 Dubai.

This throwback edition of Rooftop Rhythms is inspired by Zemanna: Manarat Al Saadiyat’s current ‘90s themed exhibition. Rooftop Rhythms founder, Dorian Paul Rogers, will be the event’s emcee, while Jaysus Zain will provide soulful throwback grooves as the evening’s DJ.

This event features a pre-selected line-up of performers, so additional performance slots will not be available on the night.

The theme for this edition of Rooftop Rhythms builds on the Zemanna exhibition, which is a visual exploration of reinterpreted memories from the ’90s that dissects, reflects, and responds to a time of change, flux, and expansion.

The Zemanna exhibition showcases nine commissioned interactive installations and the participating artists are: Afra Al Dhaheri; Aisha Al Ahmadi; Alaa Edris; Fadel Al Mheiri; Ghada Al Sayegh and Maytha Al Shamsi; Jumairy; Mays Albaik; Rawdha Al Ketbi; and Sree.

Together they have created a multi-room experience to answer the question: what led to the 1990s and what did the 1990s lead to? If you haven’t seen the exhibition yet, put on your bucket hat and head over.

And if you’re looking for a fantastic grassroots poetry event in Abu Dhabi, Rooftop Rhythms could be your jam.

Free. Fri Feb 25, 8pm. Manarat Al Saadiyat, Saadiyat Island nyuad-artscenter.org.
